Leather Jackets: The King of All Jackets

Leather jackets have long been associated with fashion, with films, with danger and perhaps most importantly, of icons. Some of the most famous people of the 20th and 21st centuries have been photographed and filmed wearing them - from Marlon Brando in the Wild One, to Tom Cruise in Top Gun to Johnny Rotten in the Sex Pistols. Leather jackets have become one of the ultimate fashion statements - so why do so many people not have them in their wardrobes?

Leather is a fantastic material, it's durable, it's versatile, it can last an age if cared for properly, and despite them looking uncomfortable to the spectator, they get more and more comfortable every time you wear it. However, for a material that's so good, leather can be very, very expensive, and for some people, while they recognise buying a leather jacket is an investment, they simply cannot afford to pay too much for a coat. When this happens, they usually turn to a much more inferior product, such as fake leather, 'pleather' or another material that looks a bit like leather, but feels nothing like it. Most importantly, these man-made materials don't last as long as leather, and so the wearer will have to invest in another jacket of a similar style after a while in order to maintain that look.

But leather doesn't have to be expensive; and the good news to any fashion conscious stylists and fashionistas is that vintage leather is as good as brand new leather, and even better, it's usually a lot cheaper. Second hand shops, vintage clothing emporiums and charity shops often have leather jackets in stock, and they will sell them for a fraction of their original price. However, these leather jackets, while less expensive than others, will not mean they are less valuable or less well made than others - it simply means they are cheaper because they have been pre-owned and are not brand new. Certain styles of leather jacket, such as leather bomber jackets, biker jackets and full length coats are always popular, and as such, there are always sellers looking to pass on these coats for a fraction of their original price.

While leather jackets can be hard to find in a suitable price range, that doesn't mean that it's impossible for everyday people to own one - in fact, it's far from it, as long as you know the right places to look, you will be able to find the right jacket for you - whether that's a  or a biker jacket, just like Brando's.
